What it actually does

Scents a whole balcony

The flowers open after sunset and the scent carries far further than the plant's size suggests.

Grown here from bulbs rather than bought in as cut stems.

Where it comes from

Originally Mexican, domesticated by the Aztecs long before Europeans arrived, and carried to India by Spanish and Portuguese traders. It grows from a bulb, flowers on a tall spike, then dies back to rest — so the pot looks empty for part of the year and that is entirely normal.

Rajnigandha, 'the fragrant one of the night'. It is the standard wedding and garland flower across north India, and one of the most valuable flowers in Indian perfumery — the scent is strongest in the hours after sunset, which is when it is worn.
