Traditionally — In Maharashtra it is sonchafa — the golden chafa — and the flowers are offered at temples, strung for the hair, and floated in water to scent a room. It is one of the flowers associated with Vishnu, and in Jain tradition it is the tree under which Vasupujya attained enlightenment. The perfume trade has taken it up as champaca absolute, but on a balcony at dusk it needs no processing at all.

Where it comes from

Native to the eastern Himalaya and the Western Ghats, and grown across the subcontinent for so long that its wild range is now argued over. It was Michelia champaca for two centuries before the genus was folded back into Magnolia, which is why older nursery labels and newer ones disagree. In the ground it becomes a large tree; in a pot it stays a shrub that flowers at shoulder height, which is where the scent is most useful.
