The heritage line

The fragrant Indian plants nobody sells properly. Mogra strung into gajra, parijatak that flowers all night and carpets the ground by morning, tulsi by the door. You can buy any of these as a stick in a plastic bag from a roadside stall; what you cannot easily buy is one grown slowly, hardened off, and potted into something worth keeping. Most of these are struck from cuttings off our own plants, and every one is a full sun plant that wants a balcony or a terrace rather than a windowsill. They are seasonal in a way houseplants are not: parijatak and krishnakamal are unavailable through May and June, because a Vidarbha summer is hard on a plant that has just been moved and we would rather hold your order than hand you a corpse.
