Where it comes from

Jasminum grandiflorum — Spanish jasmine — came from South Asia and became the backbone of the perfume industry. Grasse in France built its reputation partly on it, and it is still grown in quantity around Coimbatore and Madurai for absolute extraction. A climber rather than a shrub, so it wants something to hold.

Woven into garlands for temples and weddings across India, and the flower most often meant when a poem in Urdu or Hindi says simply 'chameli'. In Tamil Nadu the related jasmines are graded and sold by weight at dedicated flower markets before dawn.
