Kadi patta grows into a slim upright shrub that keeps going for years in a pot on a balcony. It wants sun, warmth and sharp drainage, and it sulks in cold — which is the one thing Nagpur never asks of it. Pinch the growing tips and it branches instead of running to a single stem.

What it actually does

Scents a whole balcony

The flowers open after sunset and the scent carries far further than the plant's size suggests.

The scent lives in the leaf and is released by touch, so it earns a spot near a doorway rather than a far corner.

Where it comes from

Bergera koenigii — long listed as Murraya koenigii, and still sold under that name almost everywhere. Native to the subcontinent, it grows wild through the Western Ghats and the foothills, and the strong scent in the leaf is what keeps most insects off it.

Nearly every house in South and West India that has a balcony has one of these on it. It is the plant people carry between cities in a polythene bag when they move, which is a kind of status no ornamental ever earns.
