Four years in training. Thickened trunk, aerial roots beginning to form, and a canopy pinched into shape rather than sheared flat. Ficus is the most forgiving bonsai there is: a good first tree that is not a beginner's tree.

What it actually does

Easier to focus near

Studies on people, not on rooms — Short breaks looking at greenery measurably restore attention and lower self-reported stress.

Where it comes from

Ficus microcarpa grows across tropical Asia and Australia, and as a full tree it drops aerial roots that thicken into secondary trunks. Bonsai exploits that habit deliberately — the roots you see forming here are the same mechanism that makes a banyan, working at one-fortieth the scale.

Bonsai came from Chinese penjing and was refined in Japan over a thousand years. Ficus is the species that made it viable in Indian conditions: the classic pines want a cold winter this climate simply does not provide.
