Nearly impossible to kill, which is why it is the plant we hand to people who insist they cannot keep plants alive. Tolerates a dim corner, forgives a forgotten fortnight, and — unlike almost every other houseplant — breathes out oxygen through the night rather than the day. Grown here from division.

What it actually does

Releases oxygen at night

Most plants close their pores after dark. This one runs CAM photosynthesis - it opens at night instead, and gives off oxygen while you sleep. Genuinely unusual, and the reason it ended up in so many bedrooms.

Easier to focus near

Studies on people, not on rooms — Short breaks looking at greenery measurably restore attention and lower self-reported stress.

Has a place in vastu

In vastu tradition — Usually placed in the south-east corner, or by an entrance facing outward.

Where it comes from

Native to the dry, rocky scrub of West Africa — Nigeria east to Congo — where it survives months without rain by storing water in its leaves. That is the whole explanation for its reputation: everything people find impressive about it indoors is just a desert plant finding an Indian flat undemanding.

It arrived in India through colonial-era botanical gardens and never left. Known almost everywhere as saas-bahu ka paudha for the two-toned leaf edge, and long kept by doorways as a quiet guard plant — upright, sharp-leaved, facing outward.

Vastu placement is a traditional belief, and we include it because people ask. Nothing here is a claim about health. How we treat vastu, and what it does not do.
