Plants safe for cats and dogs
Most popular houseplants are toxic to cats and dogs, and almost nobody selling them mentions it. That is not usually malice — it is that toxicity is awkward next to a price — but it means the burden of checking falls on you, after the plant is already in the house.
Here is the plain version for the plants commonly sold in India.
The ones that are safe
Areca palm. Safe, and unusual for being both safe and large — most big indoor plants are not.
Prayer plant. Safe, small, and the leaves fold up at dusk, which is genuinely worth watching.
Mogra, chameli, tuberose, parijatak, tulsi. All safe. All outdoor or balcony plants that want full sun.
Closed terrariums. Safe by contents, and sealed besides.
The ones that are not, and what they contain
Snake plant — saponins. Mild: nausea, vomiting, drooling if chewed.
ZZ plant, money plant, peace lily, aglaonema, monstera — calcium oxalate crystals. Mouth irritation and vomiting.
Jade — vomiting and lethargy if eaten.
Croton — irritant sap; wash your hands after pruning it.
Dieffenbachia — the serious one. The sap can cause intense mouth and throat swelling and temporary loss of speech, in people as well as animals. It is a handsome plant and it does not belong in a house with a cat that chews or a small child.
What to do if your pet chews one
Rinse the mouth with water, remove any plant material, and call a vet — take a photograph or a leaf with you. Most of these cause discomfort rather than danger, but dieffenbachia swelling can be serious and is worth acting on immediately.
Do not try to induce vomiting unless a vet tells you to.
Placement is not a substitute
A hanging pot is a target, not a solution. Cats climb, and a trailing money plant is more inviting up high than it was on the floor.
